Kings Canyon National Park and Our Hume Cabin Rental

Kings Canyon National Park holds some of the most dramatic and less-crowded landscapes in California. Deep granite canyons, giant sequoias, roaring waterfalls, and alpine trails make this park a must-visit for hikers, families, and nature lovers.

Here are some of the top spots to explore during your visit:

General Grant Tree and Grant Grove

Grant Grove, located just 45 minutes from our Hume cabin, is home to the famous General Grant Tree—also known as the “Nation’s Christmas Tree.” This massive giant sequoia towers over 260 feet tall and is estimated to be more than 1,600 years old. A short, paved half-mile loop leads you through the grove past interpretive signs, historic trees, and even a tunnel carved through a fallen sequoia. Nearby, Grant Grove Village offers a full-service experience for park visitors. You’ll find the Kings Canyon Visitor Center with exhibits, maps, and ranger information, as well as the Grant Grove Gift Shop and Market, which stocks souvenirs, snacks, and trail essentials. The Grant Grove Restaurant provides breakfast, lunch, and dinner in a relaxed setting, with indoor seating and a patio surrounded by tall pines. Whether you’re looking for a quick stop or a full afternoon in the trees, Grant Grove is an ideal gateway to the wonders of Kings Canyon National Park.

Zumwalt Meadow

Zumwalt Meadow is a peaceful, scenic stop along Highway 180 in Kings Canyon, just a short drive from Roads End and easily accessible from our Hume cabin. The mostly flat, one-and-a-half-mile loop trail circles a lush mountain meadow bordered by the Kings River and framed by towering granite cliffs. A boardwalk section takes you across wetland areas, making it an easy walk for families or those looking for a gentle hike with dramatic views. It’s especially beautiful in the early morning or late afternoon when the light hits the canyon walls and reflects off the river. Keep an eye out for wildlife, and don’t forget your camera.

Roaring River Falls

Roaring River Falls is a powerful 40-foot waterfall located just off Highway 180 in the Cedar Grove area of Kings Canyon. The falls are easily reached by a short, paved trail that is about 0.3 miles round trip, making it accessible for families and visitors of all ages. The water rushes through a narrow granite chute and crashes into a clear, swirling pool below, especially dramatic during spring and early summer when snowmelt is at its peak. This is a great stop for a quick hike, scenic photos, and a peaceful moment surrounded by towering canyon walls. While it’s tempting to get close, swimming is not advised due to strong currents and slippery rocks.

Kings Canyon Scenic Byway

The Kings Canyon Scenic Byway is one of the most breathtaking drives in California, winding deep into the heart of one of the deepest canyons in North America. Starting near Grant Grove and ending at Roads End in Cedar Grove, this 30-mile stretch of Highway 180 takes you through dramatic granite cliffs, dense pine forests, and along the rushing waters of the Kings River. The byway is only open seasonally, typically from mid-May through October, and offers access to some of the park’s best sights, including Grizzly Falls, Roaring River Falls, and Zumwalt Meadow. With plenty of pullouts for photos and short hikes, it’s a perfect way to experience the grandeur of Kings Canyon from the comfort of your car.

Boyden Cavern

Just 45 minutes from our Hume cabin, Boyden Cavern is a hidden gem tucked beneath the towering cliffs of Kings Canyon. This marble cave, open seasonally from late April to mid-November, offers 45-minute guided walking tours featuring stunning underground formations like stalactites, flowstone, and “drapery” curtains. Located right off Highway 180, it’s an easy stop with no hiking required. With cool temperatures year-round inside the cave, it’s a perfect mid-day adventure during your trip to Roads End. Be sure to wear sturdy shoes and bring a light jacket for the tour.

Mist Falls Trail

For those wanting a more strenuous hike, the Mist Falls trail leads deep into the canyon along the South Fork of the Kings River and rewards with one of the park’s most beautiful waterfalls. Mist Falls Trail is one of the most rewarding hikes in Kings Canyon and an ideal day trip from our Hume cabin. The trail begins at Roads End and follows the South Fork of the Kings River through lush forest and granite-lined canyon. After about 4 miles, the trail climbs to reveal Mist Falls, a powerful 100-foot cascade that lives up to its name—sending cool spray across the surrounding boulders. The full out-and-back hike is around 8 miles, moderate in difficulty, and perfect for those looking to experience the raw beauty of Kings Canyon without venturing into the backcountry. Start early, bring water, and enjoy lunch with a view at the falls.

Directions from Hume Lake to Roads End, Kings Canyon

Looking for a quiet and scenic backroad into Kings Canyon National Park? Roads End, located in the Cedar Grove area, is one of the most dramatic and lesser-known destinations in the Sierra. From Hume Lake, it’s an easy and beautiful drive through deep pine forests and granite canyons.

Travel Tips

  • Cell service is limited or nonexistent in the canyon. Download maps in advance.

Before visiting Kings Canyon National Park, be sure to consult the official NPS website for up-to-date information on road conditions, seasonal closures, and visitor alerts.

In the vast Sierra Wilderness far to the southward of the famous Yosemite Valley, there is a yet grander valley of the same kind. It is situated on the south fork of Kings River, above the most extensive groves and forests of the giant sequoia, and beneath the shadows of the highest mountains in the range, where the canyons are deepest and the snow‑laden peaks are crowded most closely together.
